Position Summary:

The Writing Marking Manager is responsible for the training, quality compliance, scheduling, coordination and administrative support of casual writing markers for AAS (year-round marking) and ICAS (2 annual event-based marking centres). This role ensures writing marking activities run smoothly by developing and delivering criteria training (for criterion-referenced marking rubrics), ongoing monitoring of accuracy and reliability of markers, setting up and allocating of writing tasks, tracking progress of writing marking operations and managing casual writing marker timesheets to support timely and accurate assessment and results delivery.

This role ensures writing marking activities run smoothly by developing and delivering criteria training (for criterion-referenced marking rubrics), ongoing monitoring of accuracy and reliability of markers, setting up and allocating of writing tasks, tracking progress of writing marking operations and managing casual writing marker timesheets to support timely and accurate assessment and results delivery.

Acting as the main point of contact for writing markers, the Writing Marking Manager will develop and deliver materials, handle queries, resolve scheduling issues and ensure smooth operations throughout marking periods. Key responsibilities include:

  • hiring, onboarding and training new casual writing markers, ensuring they meet required standards
  • developing and delivering initial training, as well as regular quality controls, to ensure markers are accurately and reliably marking to the criteria
  • developing new writing assessment tasks and marking criteria, as required
  • managing ICAS writing marking centres as they occur throughout the year (2 per year, generally 2 weeks in May and 4-6 weeks in August/September)
  • during term-time, scheduling all AAS casual markers, assigning their writing tasks and ensuring all writing is completed by markers within the allocated timeframe
  • reviewing and approving casual marker timesheets
  • responding to marker enquires.

This is a part-time role requiring flexibility, particularly during ICAS marking periods.  The preferred location is Sydney but can be remote for the right candidate.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Marker Scheduling & Coordination
  • Schedule and allocate tasks to casual writing markers for AAS and ICAS marking periods.
  • Ensure optimal resourcing based on workload and marking deadlines.
  • Monitor availability and adjust schedules as needed.
  • Task Management & Quality Control
  • Assign and distribute marking scripts to casual writing markers.
  • Track progress and ensure adherence to marking deadlines and quality standards.
  • Support resolution of marking-related issues or escalations.
  • Recruitment & Training
  • Assist in hiring and onboarding new and returning casual writing markers.
  • Support training and guidance to ensure consistency in writing marking processes.
  • Develop and deliver criteria and platform training at the start of every ICAS-marking operation, to both new and returning writing markers.
  • Maintain and update the documentation and training materials for writing markers.
  • Timesheet Management & Approvals
  • Review and approve casual marker timesheets.
  • Ensure timesheets align with scheduled hours and work completed.
  • Liaise with finance/payroll for timely processing of payments.
  • Communication & Stakeholder Engagement
  • Act as the primary point of contact for casual markers during marking events.
  • Maintain clear and effective communication with team leaders, markers and other stakeholders.
  • Provide regular updates to leadership on marking progress, staffing issues or risks.
  • Operational & Administrative Support
  • Maintain accurate records of marker availability, assignments and performance.
  • Contribute to process improvements to enhance efficiency and accuracy in marking operations.
  • Ensure compliance with all marking guidelines and assessment policies.

About you:

Essential:

  • Experience in criterion-referenced marking, e.g. AAS, ICAS or similar writing assessments. Extra consideration given to experience as a senior, double and/or chief marker.
  • Experience in developing and delivering training materials.
  • Strong coordination and administrative skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to work flexibly during peak marking periods.

Desirable:

  • Experience monitoring, mentoring and delivering feedback to writing markers.
  • Experience in scheduling and task allocation.
  • Experience in developing monitoring/control scripts to ensure marking quality.
  • Experience in hiring, training or managing casual staff.
  • Familiarity with education/testing environments.
